Most people try to avoid office politics at all costs, seeing them as unpleasant, unfair, unethical and an unnecessary distraction from their ‘real work’. If You Don’t Do Politics, Politics Will Do You will open your eyes to the fundamentals you didn’t know you need to know – the fundamentals no-one ever teaches you, including what office politics actually are and how being politically intelligent is the single biggest determinant of your personal and professional success.
Drawing on her own experiences as an executive, together with insights from some of the leading business thinkers of our time, Niven Postma will show you it is possible to play politics without sacrificing your principles and teach you how to use politics to advance your career, benefit your team and build the organisation you are part of.
Niven Postma has had a wide and varied career across multiple organisations and sectors, in South Africa and internationally. Her executive roles include being CEO of the Businesswomen’s Association (BWA), CEO of NOAH (Nurturing Orphans of AIDS for Humanity), Head of External Strategy and then Head of the SARB Academy at the South African Reserve Bank and Head of Leadership and Culture for the Standard Bank Group (the largest bank by assets in Africa).
She is the MD of Niven Postma Inc., and works as a leadership, culture and strategy facilitator for clients in Australia, Scandinavia, Germany, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the UAE.
She lectures at Henley Business School and on various global leadership development programmes and is the author of the book “If you don’t do politics, politics will do you – A guide to navigating office politics ethically and successfully.”
I believe that those of us who are privileged enough to be educated, healthy, and part of powerful networks should not be doing easy things. The only way to justify our privilege is to do the hard things that society demands of us — to solve tough problems and create opportunities for others. I launched The Room to bring the most ambitious ‘doers’ together to do these hard things that will change the world. I welcome you to be a part of our story and join this global community as we make history together.
